I knew Conrad very well - a friend for more than twenty years. Indeed, I helped him compile his book Delicate Mission from his voluminous notes and diaries of his life. One anecdote of interest was a meeting between Conrad and Ian Fleming in Kitzbhul before the war. Fleming suspected Conrad of being a spy and was pressing him. Conrad loved to tell how his Swedish wife was aghast and blurted out, "Conrad, oh no, he's much too stupid." In fact Conrad was one of the brightest men I ever met, his aristocratic affability masking a formidable authority. I'm pleased to see this site - I found my way here from his bio on Wikipedia when I was refreshing my memory about Conrad's descent from the clan O'Brien.

What an excellent and delightfully revealing website. We all owe a debt of gratitude to Paul Atkinson for his keen detective work. He not only brings to light the multi-faceted and boldly evocative expressionistic work of Conrad O'brien ffrench - the artist - but goes a long way towards revealing the truth at the core of the man whose exploits Ian Fleming used in modelling 'Bond'. It also gives us a fascinating look into a milieu to which almost no one is granted access.
And given the premise, the very facts of story itself leap off the page! What a rare marriage of passionate and serendipitous detective work becomes evident as one appreciates the websites genesis.
Finally, what a fitting tribute to such a singular man, who not only played his part in shaping recent history, but also embodied a spirit which ultimately became a cultural icon! Perhaps more importantly, we come to see an individual who appreciated and loved life passionately, and always 'looking up', followed his 'inner sensing' as he sought to know and communicate both it's secrets and it's essences.
I heartily recommend this site to everyone, everywhere!
In four words - "Thank you. Mr. Atkinson."
