Comments: Like so many of your other guests, Okinawa is a place I cannot get out of my mind. Because of the wonderful people and geography of the island, it will always be home. Lived there from 59-62 (Naha, and surrounding area) and 64-68 (Awase and Kadena). The waters around Okinawa spoiled me.
I am trying to locate a long lost friend from Okinawa, Bart Goode.
It saddens me to see what has happened to the island when Japan regained control.
It has been 40 years since I left Okinawa and it will forever have a bright place in my heart. Thanks for your web page.

Comments: I Love this site. My mother is Ryukyuan, a descendant of Gosamaru of Nakagusuku Castle. She married my father in the 1950s when he was a Marine stationed in Okinawa. After leaving the Corp, my dad worked as a civilian for the Army in California and Japan, then was promoted to a position on Camp Kinser in Okinawa. He later worked for the Air Force on Kadena Air Base. I was 10 when our family moved to Okinawa. I will never forget my first morning on the island waking up to look out over the East China Sea from the top floor of the building where we were temporarily housed at Camp Kuwae (sp). The electric blue and turquoise lagoons were dazzling – mesmerizing, all with the backdrop of the bright blue sky; I could not tell where the sky ended and the ocean began. A few days later we moved into a home on Van Buren Street on the Makiminato housing area near the infamous “Sugar Loaf Hill.” I have fond memories of that island paradise and developed an appreciation for history and a love of the ocean. As a boy would do, I explored every hill, ridge, ravine, creek and cave on that base, and collected WWII artifacts wherever I could find them - especially the hills around Sugar Loaf. However, later in my adult life, realizing the tremendous loss of life that occurred there, I got rid of the artifacts. I think it’s enough to know that men sacrificed themselves during that bloody conflict. I was always collecting something, if it wasn’t WWII artifacts, it was seashells; our family spent many days and nights collecting seashells on the lagoons and reefs of Camp Kinser, Onna Flats, Bolo Point and other gorgeous beaches. I also remember running the road races on weekends and nights at the annual Kadena carnival. Typhoons were always a thrill…I would sneak outside of the house just to experience the force of the winds. The Nakagusuku Castle ruins will always haunt my memories. I would love to wander the castle ruins again someday. Now, I’m currently gathering as much information on Ryukyu history, particularly regarding Nakagusuku Castle. Great site!
