Comments: My dad was an employee for the great Santa Fe Railway. Whenever we would go anywhere out of California, we would usually (always) ride the train. During the summer, we would take the Grand Canyon, the Santa Fe's slowest train, for a trip to Oklahoma (via Newton, KS, where we caught the Texas Chief). The Grand Canyon didn't have a diner when we boarded it in Fullerton (we lived in Oceanside and took the San Diegan to Fullerton). It wasn't attached until we got to Barstow and it wasn't ready for serving then. So we ate at the Harvey House. It was all the same Fred Harvey food that was served on the train. We only had 25 minutes to feed everyone on the train. That wasn't easy for a seven year old (me, and I was the oldest of three kids). It was supper in Barstow when we left California and breakfast when we came back. I'm not very old. Amtrak came into existence before I entered high school. Rail employees rarely get free traveling privileges anymore. That's too bad. Now I take my kids (both older teens now) on Route 66 trips. I hope they enjoy them as much as I enjoyed the train trips of my childhood.
