Comments: Hi. I m from india. I belong to family that is almost praying a thousand times a day. They are the most spiritual people i have ever seen. But i am begining to have doubts on my gods now. My family is getting crazzier every day. Especially my Dad. They often think that my Girl friend has done some
WitchCraft(Black Magic) Kaala jadu over me, where i simply am in love with her. They are making my life a living hell. Blaming everything on her, they are the ones not letting me study and they are blaming her for this fact as well. My family reads a whole lot of story Books(Katha's) for certain indian gods like vishnu and BALAK NATH. in order to make them happy. I want to know the truth about these Kathaa's. Are they for real? cause there are stupid things written in these books done by the gods. And if that is for reall! Then indian people are supposed to be in a lot of trouble by now. Ithink there is no god at all. No one ever saw or heard him. but every one has a different one. I think human himself is the god. I think we have the power to create and destroy at the same time and thats what gods are all about. Right? Email me if you think i m right somwhere or you have your views over my theory.

Comments: I like your explanation of why there are many hindu gods. However you need to know that one of them strives to be known as the only one. That is Krishna. Those who pray to krishnas as it appears in the gita, do not need to go to other gods for any reason. So we really have a competition between Christ and Krishna. Now Krishna is not forgiving for all sins at least he doesn't pay for them in any way. Thus you do not know exactly if you will be with krishna when you die except you may feel this emotion that you sort of deserve to. With Christ at least you have the bible which can be taken to court and if you meet Jesus, you can sue him for not taking you to heaven if you have accepted him and only him as your lord and savior.

Comments: any particular reason why that strange photograph sticks out so incongrously for 'Krishna' amidst others? Is getting an appropriate illustration for Krishna, just like you have got for other Gods, so tough? Let me know and I'll send you something beautiful!

Comments: Rob,
what a comprehensive view of the gods of india..really enjoyed it. I thank u for the clarity this article has given me in my seeking.

I used to be a die hard atheist since childhood-praying to Shiva, vishnu, krishna, ganesha, saraswati, hanuman etc. I beleived in ONE omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent God.

But my recent experience with a spiritual master and organization took me towards Advaita philosophy-which makes possible the existence of many gods and the god inherent in every one of us. With the possibility of man becoming GOD one day, it has obviated my belief in 'one GOD for all'.

So my allegiance shifted from Dvaita(dualistic) to the Advaita(non dualistic) shcheme of things, where there is no radical difference between man and god as man is god's low frequency existence, capable of reaching godhood by various means(bhakti, gyan, karma, meditation, etc).

All this was fine till i realized that this advaita concept of GOD is effectively atheism in the eyes of a monotheist.

Nevermind, 'reailty is relative'-I said to myself and continued my journey inwards.("One should have the courage of following truth to wherever it takes")

WIth my beleif in God shaken, I decided to test my second most prized belief-the concept of Atman through the Advaitic Lens.

To my horror- I found my earlier concept of Atman grossly misplaced: 'I' - an undying, individual, eternal existence dissolved into a concept of 'Collective Consciousness' - where in all the matter and energies of this world-living and non living, let alone spirits-all collectively comprised what is known as the grand, intellectually correct term -'the Atman'.

' we all are like small pots fully submerged in the ocean-only the outer shell is different-that too shall break with death, but only to be encapsulated in new pots of earthly desires. This cycle of birth-rebirth can be broken by enlightenment upon which we realize that we are not the little ounce of water constrained by the earthen pot, but the Whole ocean itself-called the Atman' -the popular vedic quote-"Aham Brahmaasmi" (I am God) will truly come true from that moment-when the 'I' will loose its individual consciousness to attain superconsciousness. 'I' will encompass the boundaries of mind, matter and energy to experience the cosmos in every detail and every form known or unknown to man at present. 'I' can then Expereince(not just see and hear) every nook and corner of the universe (thank god, else how badly i would have missed cricket matches, and movies and favourite soaps, otherwise), and transgress tuchch boundaries of matter and energy to give darshans to my favourite bhakts.

MOst importanlty 'I' would be freed of the compulsion to take birth again and again in despicable forms and places as per the Karmic law or otherwise.

However 'I' would have the liberty to take birth once in a while as an incarnation of GOD('I') to rid the earth of its ignorance or bad deeds or bad 'bodies' (coz u cant rid the soul off).

WOW..What a privelege it will be to be GOD--the koolest ONE (well, not the only one, but doesnt matter-gods dont indulge in rat race, atleast I wont, when I become one)
----
I hav personally met some enlightened masters, and followed their ways only to find out the darkness of their light to enlighten the soul, even though they enlighten the mind..my seeking is going on, and the result of it so far is that i hav lost faith in all forms of God.

Just wanted to express myself, and thank u for the article which i find quite enlightening , humorous and skeptical at the same time- fuelling my agnosticism.

thanx again.
