Comments: My Dad,Richard E. Johnson, from Minneapolis, MN was a "skinman" on the USS Petrof Bay. He resigned from the Navy (Reserves) as a Chief Aviation Structural Mechanic in 1960. Looking at the Presidential Unit Citation for the Petrof Bay her attached Air Squadrons participated in the following operations:

VC-76 Western Caroline Operations,9/6-29,1944
VC-76 Leyte Operation,10/20-28,1944
VC-76 Luzon Operation,1/4-18,1945
VC-76 Iwo Jima Operation,2/19 - 3/8,1945
Vc-93 Okinawa Gunto Operation, 3/25-5/30,1945

"For extraordinary heroism in action against enemy Japanese forces in the air, ashore and afloat. In action for 133 days, the U.S.S. Petrof Bay and her attached air squadrons participated in the major campaigns conducted during this period. As one of the southern carrier group which received the brunt of Japanese land-based plane attacks in the historic Battle of Leyte Gulf, the Petrof Bay fought her guns fiercely against enemy dive bombers and suicide planes, at the same time maneuvering radically to avoid damage to herself. While under attack she daringly launched her fighters and her torpedo planes to stafe and bomb Japanese Fleet units with damaging results to these vital combative ships. A highly disciplined and superbly coordinated team, the Petrof Bay and her air squadrons caused serious losses to the enemy in ships and planes destroyed or damaged, achieving a distinctive combat record which reflects the highest credit upon her gallant officers and men upon the United States Naval Service."
Signed, John L Sullivan
Secretary of the Navy

One of my Dad's favorite awards was an unofficial award called the "Imperium Neptuni Regis" which states "To all sailors wherever ye may be and to all Mermaids, Whales, Eels, Dolphins, Porpoisis, Skates, Sharks, Crabs and other living things of the sea -(then it gives the sailors name) have been worthy to be numbered as one of our Trusty Shellbacks and has been duly initiated into the Solemn Mysteries of the Ancient Order of the Deep."

Signed by Robert B Moore
Commander, U.S. Navy

My dad had this on his wall until the day he died

I am honored to have these documents, and his service metals, and hold them dear to my heart.

Carol Jagers,
Minneapolis, MN
