Comments: Just an update to my old entry in the guest book.
I served on the ESSEX from Oct 1943 to April 1946. I was MM2C and I was in the A division. My duty station was the # 3 elevator machinery equipment. Our sleeping quarters were in the # 2 elevator room. No lights out there. The guys would play cards for hours. We had great duty there. serving on the ESSEX was a great honor for me. We had a great crew in our station. I had one very close call in AUG 1945 when the Kamikaze Japs were trying to get to our fleet and Carriers. Well, I was on flight deck at # 2 elevator shooting the bull with the #2 operator and watching our ships shoot down a few Japs. We were not at GQ at this time and I had to go on duty at # 3 elevator machinery room at 12:30 pm, so, I left the area and just as I stepped off the last step 7 decks down the ship received a hit of a Kamikazee about 30 ft. from #2 elavator and blew a 15 sq.ft hole in the edge of the flight deck and killed all the 20 MM gun crew as well as the 40MM gun crew below them. The fellow I was talking to got burned head to foot. I went down to sick bay to see him, but he was all rapped up like a Mummy and couldn't talk to him.He lived for 3 days and died. That was very sad for me, but at the same time I was thankful to God that I had to go on duty at that time. When the war ended shortly after that, during the surrender, the ESSEX and 2 Destroyers left the fleet for Bremerton Wash.where we retired the ship. I left the ship april 6 1946
