Comments: Dear Professor Hoopes,

My name is Bo Ernstson, a ph.d student in social anthropology, School of Global Studies, Gothenburg University, Sweden.

My project, which will be finished in a couple of months or so, is an outlook of the culture history of the south american indians seen from the perspective of Erland Nordenskiöld, his students, and friend Kaj Birket-Smith.

When this project is finished my plan will be to follow up some of the distribution studies presented by the Nordenskiöld school (or perhaps more rightly - a Scandinavian school of culture history) which focus on a cultural continuity between the Amazon area, Northern South America, and lower Central America. The thing which I would like get a clearer grip on is the relationships between Chibcha and Arawak. Nordenskiölds distribution maps visualize a cultural continuity over large areas - especially within the area of northwestern South America and Central America. (Karl-Gustav Izikowitz comparative study will be given priority in my future investigations).

Since Nordenskiöld, Birket-Smith, Kroeber and other american cultural anthropologists, anthropologists no longer care for culture history. Dough Jones article in American Anthropologist a couple of years a go showed that anthropologists are not willing to take part in the overall project of "deep-history".

We have, of course, Helms, Carneiro, Hornborg, Whitehead, Sherzer, and a couple of other anthropologists with a special interest in culture areas, culture history and evolution.

My intention is to continue and follow up the work of the Nordenskiöld/Scandinavian School.

I have read some of your work with great interest. I really like the way you (Cooke, Marcus& Flannery, Neves, modern archaeology if you will) handle the evolutionary process and culture history. The Dumbarton oaks publication on Chibcha and Gold is a real pleasure to read.

Yours

Bo Ernstson

I only wanted to divert your attention to the existence of stone balls in Europe, just like those in Costa Rica.
