Comments: Platanos & Collard Greens: New Multicultural Play for College Audiences

As you plan your student events and activities for the 2004-2005 school year, we would love to introduce you to the smash hit play Platanos and Collard Greens, which we can perform at your school. Platanos and Collard Greens hit the New York stage last summer, and completed a very successful college tour last fall and spring. This play encourages discussion and dialogue between students while entertaining and educating.

Platanos and Collard Greens was written by David Lamb, www.lambbooks.com. David is an Adjunct Professor at John Jay College in NYC, where he teaches a course entitled Society and Hip Hop Culture.

Platanos and Collard Greens is based on David's book "Do Platanos Go Wit' Collard Greens?" It is an intellectual, romantic comedy that examines stereotypes and cultural differences and similarities between Blacks and Latinos. Platanos is funny, explosive, and touching. It will remind you of your family, your loves, and your life. It will make you laugh, make you angry, and make you think.

Platanos and Collard Greens has been performed at colleges and universities from coast to coast, from Maryland to California to Illinois to Rhode Island. Here is what students have said: "The beauty of this play is that it addresses the complexities of both the black and Latino culture,", The University of Illinois, Champagne-Urbana, and "It was insightful because we need to understand the relationship between two generally stereotyped cultures … the play was realistic, especially in terms of the interactions within the Latino family." Rutgers University.

VIBE magazine writes that Platanos and Collard Greens "asks if love between a Black man and a Latina woman can survive?"

The SOURCE Magazine says that Platanos "drops science about history and race".

The Amsterdam News praises Platanos as "a play everyone can relate to, a Hip Hop drama, incorporating humor, and utilizing extraordinary, moving and explosive poetry." Platanos tells the story of two college students, a Black man, and a Latina woman, forced to overcome prejudice and ignorance, while defending their bond from the biases of family and friends. …Platanos
wins on all levels… it entertains, educates [and] leaves one satisfied."

Felipe Luciano, former Chairman of the Young Lords and original member of the Last Poets says that he's waited 35 years for a play like Platanos and Collard Greens.

For more information including reviews and articles concerning appearances of the play at colleges and universities please visit our website at www.platanosandcollardgreens.com.

Again, we would love to perform Platanos and Collard Greens at your school. You can contact us via email with any questions, so that we can begin making arrangements. Don't forget to include your phone number in the email. You can also contact us by calling 646-522-4348.

Thank you
David Lamb
