Comments: Did you know that the "Christmas" holiday that most Christians know as the Jesus character's birthday is not a Christian holiday at all? In fact, the Jesus character was supposedly born sometime in September, which is around 6 months after passover. The origin of the holiday being celebrated in December are in Europe, where christmas was celebrated by pagans long before they had even heard of the Jesus character. Proof of the Jesus character not being born in December lies in the Christian holy book where it mentions that shepards were tending their flocks of sheep. It's HIGHLY unlikely that they would be doing this in the freezing judean December temperatures...The holiday I am referring to is known by a fewnames in differentparts of the world.

In Rome, it is their Winter Solstice and has been celebrated since a looooong time before the Jesus character was born. They named the holiday Saturnalia, honoring the God of agriculture, Saturn. "Christmas" caroling actually began here by people who would dress up and sing to entertain their neighbors. They were called "Mummers" at that time.

In Northern Europe, the holiday is known as "Yule." Yule symbolizes the Sun God, Mithras being born. As the Sun God grows and matures, the days become longer and warmer. It is customary to light a candle to encourage Mithras, and the sun, to reappear next year. Huge Yule logs are burned in honor of the sun. The word Yule itself means “wheel,” the wheel being a pagan symbol for the sun. Mistletoe was considered a sacred plant, and the custom of kissing under the mistletoe began as a fertility ritual. Hollyberries were thought to be a food of the gods.

The tree is the one symbol that unites almost all the northern European winter solstices. Live evergreen trees were often brought into homes during the harsh winters as a reminder to inhabitants that soon their crops would grow again. Evergreen boughs were sometimes carried as totems of good luck and were often present at weddings, representing fertility. The Druids used the tree as a religious symbol, holding their sacred ceremonies while surrounding and worshipping huge trees.

So where did the rumor start that the Jesus character was born on December 25th? It started with Pope Julius I in the year 520 in Rome! He apparently figured it would further his cause in converting "heathen pagans" to Christianity as it wouldn't change their traditional celebrations, feasts, rituals, and family get-togethers.

So now, you know the origins of Christmas. Just like the other holidays of the religion, its roots are derivitive.
