I have created a fresh new guestbook for the incoming NAPS class of '06 and their parents. '06 Parents and students, please use the
2006 Guestbook
to communicate now. All you veteran NAPS parents - Don't forget to sign in regularly and mentor the incoming class for the new year!
This guestbook is now archived. No further posts will be released. '05 Parents may use the new guestbook if they wish. It's been a great ride and best wishes for your next step along the journey. Be sure to join the USNAparents listserve if you have a USNA bound NAPSter. The link is

. It's good to connect with others along the way!

As far as getting to Boston Airport for a 6:30pm flight on I-Day: you won't make it. The drive from Newport to Providence is about 25 minutes with no traffic and being familiar with the route. Boston is at least another hour to an hour and a half from there with the traffic, etc. And Karen is correct that you probably won't leave the base until 5pm or so. If you absolutely have to get back that night, try flying out of Providence - it might be a little bit more money, but it's closer and smaller and all the car rental agencies are right there.
Also, the big bridge is a toll bridge ($2 each way). At Parent's Weekend, we bought a roll of tokens and left them with our son. He did not have a car so it was another way to help the driver out.

Sorry for the incorrect email address. We recently got rid of AOL and I keep forgetting. I am getting up there! 55 eek.
I came up with an idea. How about taking our discussion, as parents of Napsters who are either not going to the USNA or waffling about it, to a Yahoo groups website to discuss? I think, reading up on other guest books, that this is an unusual occurrence and it might be better if we discussed it amongst ourselves off of this board so this board can be the support to those going, as opposed to not going and to the new Napsters so they can get their questions answered. Anyone interested, write to me and I will get it going.
Thanks,
Kathy
Thank you for that suggestion. It's difficult for those coming in to read about students dropping so I appreciate the move off of our guestbook.

This is for Katherine Coyne. I tried to email you initially at the email address you posted on your first posting, but my email came back "no mailbox found." If you could porvide a good email address or email me directly, we could converse and see if we may be related.
Best wishes to you and your son. Hope to hear from you soon.

Hello all. I was just wondering if any numbers were released on how many graduates decided to take their appointments to USNA and how many decided to pass. Just curious. I was also wondering why the Parents Weekend at Naps is so late. At USNA it is right after indoc and at Naps it is a few weeks after indoc ends. Does anyone know why or has this changed?
Very few NAPSters fail to show up for I-day. There are always a few, just as there are a few who accept an appointment to NAPS but don't show up. Because there is discussion here about no shows, it makes it look like it's a big issue. It is not. Students do consider alternatives along the way. NAPSTERS are young adults considering their futures. It is a thoughtful process. But they also know what they are choosing and most complete the journey. In many civilian colleges only 30-35% of incoming freshman comlete their 4 years at their initial institution. USNA sports about 90%. So there are some students who choose other paths. But overall, USNA has quiet a remarkable record. And NAPS likewise. Students entering from NAPS fare better at USNA because the "reconsider factor" is greatly reduced. They know what they are choosing already from their NAPS journey. Hence they are more sure of their choice.
Parents Weekend at NAPS is traditionally in late Sept or early Oct. That's just how they do it. Could change, but that's the NAPS schedule.
