Comments: I was aboard Big I 59,60 and 61. Good to see some familiar old names and faces. I was a Radioman. Good work on the website...something I can review with the grandchildren.

Comments: Hi all- I have some fantastic memories of Interpreter cruises out to about 1,000 miles from shore. No smells out there so Golden Gate park was great when we came in, usually through the fog, to TI. Once I remember we almost hit the darn bridge! Big current plus fog, but it was always great to come in.Just before I went aboard at the end of Dec 1961, the Ship was on station during an especially bad storm I was told and rivits had to be replaced! When we went out that winter(1962) I recall bing in a storm which caused us to run with the waves for 7 days maintaining only steerage way. Just incredible waves in the North Pacific in Winter! She was a good old Liberty! Reminded me of my other ship the USS Caloosahatchee AO-98. But in the North Pacific we had very little good weather and so used Loran skywaves a lot for navigation--and seamounts which we found. It was tricky!! I remember a whale under the ship with tail on one side and head on the other scratching its back! I don't think we caught too many fish way out there??? But we sured watched Albatross glide down the troughs and tip over the crests-fascinating! Thank goodnes for the hold made into a gymn! Good exercise place at the end of the day! I got out 30 days early on Sept of 1962 to go to College which I did do and have now retired after 30 years of teaching. I enjoy the site and thank those who made it and keep it.

Comments: Lefler, Robert QMSN/QM3(Bob)or "Swifty" as McNutter SM called it. And all those weather birds in the balloon shack like Revoir. We also did the bathothermograph drops. I was on the crew in 1962 and was released from the Navy to go to college which I did and became a teacher for 30 years. I remember my friend Dave Kastrup and I remember Lt Bonham(saw photo). I remember navigating with Loran skywaves-quite a trick!I remember the Seattle World's Fair and guiding tours of the ship. And the North Pacific Weather! One storm I remember we ran with the waves for 7 days, just making steerageway. The huge 6' wing span Albatros gliding down the wave troughs and then tipping over the crests are among my forever memories. Many good memories. Bob Lefler

Comments: I was aboard the USS Tracer in 60 to 62. Radioman for a bit then settled in deck force. I din't see names I remember like Angus Charimiah or Tucker from Texas. The captain was from Iceland, used to cause the receivers of his messages fits when he wrote then in Icelandic! Asmundson? Does that sound right? Anyway, sure brings back some memories! Very nice web page. John
