Share Your Tip Here! we also had an intensly hard time with his teeth last year. with a lot of patience we ended up pretending each separate tooth was a precious gem that had to be kept polished for a king's special crown after his big kid teeth came in. his tounge was a gold brick. forcing of any brushing was not tolerated and the tooth by tooth method took a little while but it was a gentler bedtime.

Share Your Tip Here! Both of my sons (5 year old twins) REALLY hate getting their teeth brushed! We found that letting them choose special toothbrushes and toothpaste with characters on them helped a little, as does distracting them by making up a funny song to sing while we brush. But the biggest help has been letting them hold onto a face cloth while we brush, so that any little drips of water or toothpaste can be wiped away IMMEDIATELY. The messiness was what was really causing most of the anguish and upset (for one of of them in particular).

Share Your Tip Here! I read these ideas mentioned earlier & wanted to say they worked for us too.

We let J pick out 2-3 toothbrushes (1 battery-powered and some cartoon guy on it). He also has a favorite flavor of toothpaste and won't use ANYTHING else. Allowing him to CHOOSE the brush (empowering him) and having paste he LIKES were the keys for us. Also, "ACT" makes kid-friendly bubble gum mouthwash that he does once in awhile. Good luck!

Share Your Tip Here! I found with a spirited child that certain personal care issues were a problem. Depending on your own child's sensitivity to physical stimuli, you might find that using a battery powered toothbrush will work wonders. Sensory issues are odd sometimes - where you think a child might need less, they may actually need more and in my case I found that the battery powered toothbrush was just what my son needed to get him brushing his teeth.
