Comments: Congratulations on the decision to name a Crompton after the famous Spifire designer R.J.Mitchell.For me, personally,it was very interesting news.At the beginning of the 1990's the director of civil engineering announced plans to name ten class 33 locomotives based at Eastliegh depot,where I worked. A staff competition was organised to choose the names.I won this competition with my entry of names associated with the Spitfire,and,on the 18th April 1991,was honoured and privileged to name the first one,Dutch liveried 33047 "Spitfire",at a ceremony at Eastleigh depot.All the names I suggested were used apart from two. These were "R.J.Mitchell" and "Supermarine".I was a little disappointed that "R.J.Mitchell" was not used at the time so now you can see why I am pleased that you are going to honour him by naming 33063 "R.J.Mitchell". As you probularly know, Mr,R.J.Mitchell worked at the Supermarine works in Southampton for a while and the first Spitfire,K5054, flew from the airfield next to Eastleigh depot. I will finish by wishing you all a great day when you name 33063 "R.J.Mitchell" on the 3rd September.
