My mom grew up in Baldwinsville. As a junior high school student in 1965 I had written the Gettysburg National Park inquiring about the Battery B monument there. I still have the letter. Thank you for this web site.

We have the discharge papers for William H. Thorn. Mustered the 24th day of August, 1861, to serve three years, discharged 13th day of August 1864 "in front of Petersburg, VA" by reason of "being mustered out of service on expiration of his term" Said "William H. Thorn was born in the State of ohio, is 26 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fair complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, and by occupation, when enrolled, a farmer." We are not sure why we have this document as it is not a family name in our ancestry. Perhaps someone can give us more information.

Looking for information on the Battery roll call for September 17th or close before that date. For Officers, nco's, privates, down to Wagoneer. Location for this source would be a great help to me. Thank you for reading my request even if you can't provide any assistance to my quest.

Great grandfather, James Edson Decker, was one of the origianl volunteers. It's been interesting to follow his war time travails via a set of letters he sent home (Stephen Dreher has transcribed them) and to visit several of the sites occupied by Battery B. Found that he and my Mother's ancestor (106th NY Inf.) were very near each other in March-April '65 south of Petersburg--wonder if they met?
