I want to bring you attention to 2 little girls that I have cared for since they were 1 and 3. Amy and Emily are two little girls who live in NH. They have lost both their parents. Their lost mother committed suicide when Emily was just 6 months old. Their father was diagnosed with cancer this past Spring and he died in July. The girls family life was complicated and difficult as their father was older (in his late 60s) and they were his "second" family. He hadn't wanted them but their mother had stopped taking her BCPs. After his death, he was going to give them up to the mother's family until he found out how much Social Security money he would receive for the girls each month. Right now temporary custody has been awarded to an older half sister who has 3 children of her own. This is someone who the girls saw infrequently - mostly at holidays. Their aunt has petitioned the court for custody but it is a complicated matter because it seems the half sister and the other half sister want the $ that the girls receive from SSI and their father's pension - which is a considerable amount. Right now that money is essentially frozen by the court until a decision can be made. But, she is the girl's half sister and is sort of making an effort. As of December 9, the judge had extended the time to make his decision another 60 days. I have cared for these children as a babysitter from the time they were 1 and 3. They usually spent 2 to 3 weekends a month at my house and every Tuesday afternoon. They are beautiful, wonderful children. Emily, who is 6 is seemingly doing ok right now. Amy, who is 8, is having a rough time. Amy is very clear that she wants to live with her Auntie. I am not sure if Emily has a big preference one way or the other - she just wants to be loved. Right now, I do not see them that much as there is a custody battle between their aunt (mother's side) and their older half sister (father's side). The girls have birthdays in Jan. (Amy) and Feb. (Em). So, we hope to be able to give them a better birthday than they have had in the past. Last year, Emily was allowed to have a party at Burger King but her father returned all of her gifts to the store and kept the money for himself. They didn't decide to let Amy have a party until the day before so when she tried to invite children - no one could/would come. This was not unusual - he wouldn't allow toys in the house - any gifts that the girls brought home he sold if he could. Any clothing that he could return to the store, he would. These children have been through a lot. The girls have a website that gives a bit of the history, I have given you here and it links to separate pages for each child with a list of their needs, wishes and dreams. I work as an LNA at the local hospital on a reduced schedule due to medical issues so I don't have the money to just replace all the things they have lost.
