Comments: Huskies football players facing assault charges
David Hutton, The StarPhoenix

Two University of Saskatchewan Huskies football players face assault charges following an incident at a local nightclub in October.

Linebacker Gabe Mackesey, 25, and defensive lineman Jay Bradshaw, 21, have been charged with common assault after an incident Oct. 8 at around 1 a.m.

at the Hose and Hydrant brew pub located just off Broadway Avenue.

A Hose and Hydrant bouncer, who is a U of S student, says he was just doing his job when he asked a group of people to leave their drinks inside as they were leaving the pub.

He said he grabbed a drink and put it on a railing.

"I got knocked down and all of a sudden, the next thing I know, I'm on the ground in the entrance getting fed with boots.

"It was ridiculous," he says. "There was no reason for that to happen." The bouncer, who did not want to be identifi ed, says he didn't have time to press an alarm to alert other employees.

He received a black eye and scrapes on his forehead in the incident.

Another bouncer received a mild concussion while trying to break up the altercation.

As a result of the incident, several people have been banned from entering the Hose and Hydrant.

Mackesey and Bradshaw are scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 8 and 9, respectively.

Huskies head coach Brian Towriss says the team dealt with the issue internally during the season. He and acting athletic director Bill Seymour didn't consider suspending the players because it was not a recurring problem.

"We were aware of the incident and dealt with it internally and with the management of the Hose and Hydrant," says Towriss.

"Both sides were satisfi ed in the end.

"Both these guys are good, solid citizens." Mackesey was an integral part in the Huskies Vanier Cup run this year. He was named CIS player of the week after the team's upset Hardy Cup playoff win over Manitoba.

Before coming to the Huskies, he was a standout player with the Saskatoon Hilltops and Evan Hardy Souls.

He is in his final year of commerce at the U of S and has one more year of eligibility remaining with the Huskies.

Bradshaw, an engineering student and a member of the track and field team, declined comment, while Mackesey did not return repeated messages requesting an interview.

Towriss also confi rmed two players were suspended indefi nitely from the team in connection with an incident at Jax Nightclub during a college of kinesiology pub crawl on Sept. 29.

Carter Munday, a student at the U of S who was on the pub crawl, was attempting to help an acquaintance off the ground when he says he was blindsided by a punch.

He lost one front tooth, had his jaw broken and spent the weekend in the hospital.
