Comments: I had umbilical hernia repaired on Sept. 30, 2009. It has now been almost 4 weeks and I still have alot of foul smelling drainage and discomfort. The doctor looked at it about 10 days ago and said I had an opening in the incision. He used some kind of chemical on the end of long cotton swabs that he said would have a reaction with the drainage and seal the incision. I don't think it has happened. Is this normal???

Comments: Hello! I just had surgery this past Tuesday for bilateral inguinal (indirect) hernias. I must say that I didn't know much about what to expect, and I definitely had no clue what to expect during the recovery. My biggest fear was that I would do something to re-open or have my hernias re-occur, but now it's that these scars won't ever go away. I had open surgery, with meshes stitched in, but staples on the incisions. So far, each day has been getting better, but I'm starting to experience this mild cramping on the left side, right above my incision. I don't know what that's all about, and I have been unsuccessful in finding anything online, but I'm hoping it's nothing serious. What really amazes me is how little information I received for post surgery care. Am I supposed to be in bed for days, or should I be moving around? Is a little straining normal, or is that going to ruin my surgery? So far, the best site I found was this one: http://ehealthforum.com/health/topic129614.html. I'm hoping that when I have my post-op visit with my doctor next week, I find out that everything is good. Until then, thanks for all the posts and information!...take care!...

Comments: I had bilateral inguinal lap/mesh surgery scheduled June 4, 2009. My surgeon, Jeffrey Maire, D.O., repaired the two inguinal hernias, and found a femoral hernia as well which he also repaired. He lined me with a bunch of mesh, anchored with titanium staples. He did a great job pointing out the bumps in the road (it's really painful for a couple of days afterward, don't be surprised by the bruising or blackening..."it won't fall off", any muscle pulls accompanying hernia may hurt another year)

I started rehabbing three days after surgery (real light at first), and less than two months later played volleyball all day long in a sand tournament. We won our division, pretty easily.

If you need this done and you're in the Des Moines area, check out Jeff Maire. Great surgeon, great patient educator, and apparently psychic when it comes to warning patients of potential bumps along the road to recover.

Good luck with your hernia repair. You're going to like it, as long as you're sufficiently doped up the first couple of days. You end up with a bionic abdominal wall. Better than the original model, and nearly impervious all manner of potential hernia threats in the future.
