Polar Bear Facts: The polar bear's scientific name is Ursus maritimus, formerly Thalarctos maritimus. There are as many as 12 subpopulations of polar bears in the wild. A polar bear may live between 25 and 30 years. A standing male polar bear may measure up to 11 feet. A standing female polar bear may measure up to 8 feet. A male polar bear may weigh up to over 1,600 pounds. A female polar bear may weigh up to over 600 pounds. Seals are a polar bear's primary source of food. A polar bear's stomach can hold up to 150 pounds of food. A polar bear can go weeks without eating.
