The horse has been my best teacher. I’m still learning from him.
On starting a colt… Are you working on the start, or the finish?
Everything you do with the horse begins with RESPECT. I mean the kind of respect he had for his Mama. The horse knows I'm not his Mama, but he needs to understand that I’m not bad.
Most of what I’ve learned about the horse and his behaviors, I’ve learned from watching a fly on a horse. That horse felt the fly land on him, and he did just enough to get that fly to leave him. He only moved the muscles necessary, and when the fly was gone, the horse quit twitching that muscle right now! This tells me that I can be as light as the fly to get my horse doing what we need to do
Appreciate your horse when he does the right thing.
The horse was born God’s perfect animal. If he has character flaws and respect issues, it’s because us humans put them there.
Put a little feel down that line, and ask him in a polite kind of a way.
The ear and the eye are connected to the mind. The feet follow the mind. The ear will tell you where the feet will be going.
You’ve got to stay interesting to the horse, especially the colt. If you don’t keep his mind on you, it will wander… and the feet follow the mind.
You must be more interesting to the horse than a pile of horse manure.
