Random Bits Of Wisdom:
  1. More than half of all fatal fires happen at night, between the hours of 2 a.m. and 6 a.m.
  2. Smoke kills more people than flames. A lot more. Poisonous gases released by fire actually put people into a deeper sleep and many suffocate without being aware of the fire.
  3. You are more likely to die of a fire in your own home than anywhere.
  4. 80 percent of fatal home fires occur in residences without a working smoke detector.
  5. The smell of smoke may not awaken a sleeping person. Smoke detectors have been credited with saving so many lives that most states have laws requiring them.
  6. As a minimum, install smoke detectors outside of sleeping areas and on each level of the home.
  7. Riding a bike? Be visible. Wear bright colors during the day. At night, use a headlight and taillight and wear white or reflective clothing.
  8. Don't become a statistic. Always practice bicycle safety. Parents, take the time to discuss safe biking with your kids!
  9. When riding a bike, keep to the right and always ride in the direction of traffic. Use bike and multi-use trails when possible.
  10. Why is Carbon Monoxide (CO) dangerous? CO is dangerous because the bloodstream more readily absorbs it than oxygen. CO joins with hemoglobin in the blood, displacing oxygen that your organs need to function. Initially, CO poisoning causes flu like symptoms, like headaches, fatigue, nausea, dizziness and confusion. More fuel burning appliances are used during the colder months, so people may mistake CO poisoning for the flu.
